Thank you for believing.

Certificates of Ascertainment:

With all Certificates of Ascertainment now collected and posted, we are proud to announce that our campaign received (at least) 721 Popular Votes in the 2016 Presidential Election! Because every state reports its write-in results differently (some give specific breakdowns for each write-in; others do one large lump sum for all write-ins), we won't ever have an exact number.

However, scoring 721 total Popular Votes is incredible - and we can't thank you enough!

Here are some specifics and links to all Certificates of Ascertainment. (If you were a Presidential Elector, your name might appear on one of these Certificates - I'll make a special note next to that link so people can check out their names!)

The Certificate of Ascertainment identifies the winning candidates and Presidential Electors in each state in the U.S. and lists the number of votes all Electors received. The Certificate represents a crucial link between the Popular Vote and Electoral Vote. Technically, on Election Day, U.S. citizens cast votes for the candidates' Electors and NOT the candidates themselves. (That's right! If you were one of my Electors in a state where I received a vote, that vote technically was for YOU! How cool is that?!!!) These certificates list the names of the Electors that the candidates had in each state.

On December 19, 2016, the winning Electors met in their state and voted for the President and Vice President on separate ballots. The Electors recorded their votes on six “Certificates of Vote”, which were paired with the six remaining Certificates of Ascertainment.

The Electors signed, sealed, and certified six sets of Electoral Votes. A set of Electoral Votes consists of one Certificate of Ascertainment and one Certificate of Vote. These are distributed immediately as follows:

* One goes to the President of the Senate (the Vice President) for the official count of the Electoral Votes in January;

* Two packages go to the Secretary of State in the state where the Electors met. One is an archival set that becomes part of the public record of the Secretary of State's office; the other is a reserve set that is subject to the call of the President of the Senate to replace missing or incomplete Electoral Votes;

* Two packages go to the Archivist. One is an archival set that becomes part of the permanent collection at the National Archives and Records Administration; the other is a reserve set that is subject to the call of the President of the Senate to replace missing or incomplete Electoral Votes; and

* One set goes to the presiding judge in the district where the Electors met. This is also a reserve set that is subject to the call of the President of the Senate to replace missing or incomplete Electoral Votes.
Got all that?

OK, here is the state-by-state breakdown. I have provided links to the PDFs of each Certificate of Ascertainment - they are hyperlinked to the name of the state. NOTE: For many states, unless a write-in candidate came close to winning the state, all votes for write-ins are lumped together and never reported individually. These are often reported as "scattered", "lump sum", or simply added together. Other states report out all write-in votes for all official write-in candidates.

2016 FINAL NUMBERS (WRITE-INS)

In 2016, 698,990 Popular Votes (of the 136,669,276 Popular Votes cast) went to write-in candidates (or 0.51%)

Our campaign earned 721 confirmed Popular Votes; estimates from "lump sums" (along with cross-referencing voter comments as well as news reports) put us at 1,015 total Popular Votes or (roughly) 0.14% of all write-in ballots across the United States. The 1,015 Popular Votes meant our campaign earned 0.00074% of all Popular Votes cast in the 2016 Election.

Not bad for a lesson plan...

In the end, our campaign picked up 721 Popular Votes from across the United States. In Ohio, our vote total jumped to 589 when all was said and done! Absolutely incredible! [Click picture for a larger version.]

As you can see in the Certificate of Ascertainment for the State of Ohio, the Hartnell-Marshall campaign received 589 Popular Votes! HOWEVER, Ben Hartnell and Dave Marshall received 0 Popular Votes. The names of their 18 Electoral College representatives are shown here and are technically the ones that received the 589 Popular Votes from the people of Ohio. Had the Hartnell-Marshall campaign won the state, then these 18 Electors would have cast their 18 total Electoral Votes for Ben Hartnell/Dave Marshall. [Click picture for a larger version.]
